The history of the Computing Industry shows a journey of human creativity, reflecting the evolution of technology from early mechanical devices like the abacus to today’s AI. This essay will look at the key milestones in the computing industry from 1936-2024 and the future of computers.
In 1936, Alan Turing created the Turing Machine. A Turing Machine is the original idealised model of a computer. Turing machines are the equivalent to modern electronic computers at a certain theoretical level but differ in many ways. A Turing machine is a concept more than anything. It is a mental model with a set of rules and concepts that be applied to generate theoretically anything. The machine defines what a computer is what they can do and even more importantly what a computer cannot do. This is why it is a key moment in the computer industry because every computer is a physical implementation of the Turing machine. Any Turing Machine consisting of a liner of cells known as the tape together with a single active cell known as the head. The cells on the tape can have a certain set of possible colours, and the head can be in a certain set of possible states. The fact is that certain Turing machines are "universal", in the sense that with proper input, they can be made to perform any ordinary computation.
In 1946, the first programmable electronic, general-purpose digital computer was created, The Eniac. The device was designed by John Mauchly and J Presper Eckert to calculate artillery firing tables for the United States army’s ballistic research laboratory. The Eniac revolutionised computing technology by introducing the concept of programmability, paving the way for modern computers.
The first hard drive was invented in 1956 by IBM. It could store 5MB of data which was a huge amount at the time. The model was about the size of two large fridges and weighed about a ton. The disk drive created a new level in the computer data hierarchy known as secondary storage today. Dynamic Random Access Memory, also known as RAM, was first invented in 1968 by Robert Dennard. This invention led to computers being able to reach a new of technological advancement. These components being invented allowed the industry to evolve because they serve functions that work together to optimise a computers performance.
Arpanet arose from a desire to share information over great distances without the need for dedicated phone connections between each computer on a network. It was first used in 1969 and decommissioned in 1989. Arpanet’s main use was for academic and research purposes. It was one of the first operational packet switching networks and it laid the foundation for what would become modern internet. When Arpanet was taken down it was a prototype for a network that could survive a doomsday scenario where nodes could be destroyed, and the network would find its way to mode data through what was left.
The Intel 4004 was a major breakthrough in the history of computing. In 1971 Intel released the intel 4004, the first microprocessor and general programmable processor. The 4004 replaced the need for custom built logic programming because it could be programmed for a variety of uses. In the same year, the floppy disk was born when IBM commercialised technology designed to change tape drives. The floppy disk made it possible to easily load software and updates onto mainframe computers. It quickly became the most widely used storage medium for small systems.
In 1973 the Ethernet cable was invented by researcher, Bob Metcalfe. He invented a high-speed networking system that allowed computer workstations, servers, and printers to share data and resources. The invention was so important in 1973 because it allowed computers to communicate with each other at high speeds over long distances. 2 years later. MITS created the Altair 8800. This microcomputer was the first commercially successful personal computer, and it helped launch the microcomputer revolution of the 1970s. This device pioneered the personal computer age because it showed that computers could be used for more than just science and business and that people did not need years of specialised training to use them. Towards the end of the 70s Steve Wozniak developed Apple II. This was one of the first successful mass-produced microcomputer products and is widely regarded as one of the most important personal computers of all time to its role in popularising home computing and influencing later software development. Apple II computers displayed text and two resolutions of colour graphics.
In 1981 Microsoft developed and released MS-DOS, a computer operating system that was leading OS in the 1980s. MS Dos was the first operating system for IBM-compatible PCs and was a key part of the development of personal computing. It helped make computers accessible to millions of people. In the same year, the IBM PC was announced on August 12. It was based on an Intel 8088 microprocessor and used Microsoft’s MS-DOS operating system. It had widespread adoption. Many businesses adopted the personal computer leading to a revolution of business computing. This PC helped make computing mainstream by enabling users to process text, play games and connect to tv.
On November 20, 1985, Microsoft Windows 1.0 was released. This creation was important because it was the first version of the Microsoft windows line and introduced the graphical user interface. Windows 1.0 allowed users to interact with the computer using a mouse instead of MS-DOS commands. This made the operating system easier to use. It also invited other companies to create applications that could work with the operating system which opened up app development. However, the operating system received mixed reviews because it was slow, had mediocre performance and relied too much on the mouse. It took two more versions of Windows for the operating system to become popular.
HTML 1.0 was released in 1993 and was an important moment in the history of the internet as it introduced the fundamental idea of linking documents together and set up the world wide web. Tim Berners-Lee wrote it. Since then, there have been many different versions of HTML. The most widely used version throughout the 2000s was HTML 4.01 which became an official standard in December 1999. That same year. The World Wide Web was released to the public This is a significant part in computing history since it made the internet accessible to everyone for free not just for scientists and revolutionised how people communicate learn work and gather information. The WWW changed how people communicate through social media, email, chat rooms, news, groups and audio and video transmission. This invention also led to the growth of online business.
The 2000s showed the rise of the internet and web. At the dawn of the 21st century, the internet started to mature beyond its early days of static web pages. In the early 2000s there was a boost in user generated content, social media platforms and interactive websites. Companies like Google, Facebook, YouTube, and Amazon thrived. The decade saw the expansion of broadband internet access which enabled faster connections for consumers and businesses.
The smart phone revolution began in 2007 and has been on a rise ever since. The introduction to the iPhone in 2007 marked a shift in computing. Smartphones became a worldwide sensation because they were a combination of computing, communication and entertainment into a single portable device. Apple iOS and Googles Android operating systems created the foundation for the modern smartphone.
The future of computing looks even more promising, with innovations in AI, Quantum computing and brain computer interfaces likely to start a revolution in many industries. As technology continues to advance at a sky-high pace, we are entering an era where computing is a key part in our daily lives.
